The signature bunchgrass of BC's interior grasslands — and one of the most ecologically important plants at ABNC. Bluebunch Wheatgrass forms the backbone of the shrub-steppe ecosystem.
Field Note
Bluebunch Wheatgrass is the provincial grass of BC! It can live for over 100 years in undisturbed grasslands. A single clump you see today may have been growing here since before your great-grandparents were born.
Where to Spot It at ABNC
The open hillsides and grassland areas throughout the ABNC trails. Look for round bunchy tufts of grey-green grass with long seed stalks in summer.
Why It Matters
Bluebunch Wheatgrass is the foundation species of BC's interior grasslands. It stabilizes soil, provides food and cover for grassland wildlife, and is highly vulnerable to invasion by non-native grasses like cheatgrass.
Good to Know
This clumpy grass is the superstar of the grassland! It grows in round tufts and has been here for thousands of years. Deer, birds, and insects all depend on it.
