Song Sparrow
Melospiza melodia
A plump, streaky sparrow with a dark central breast spot and an incredibly varied, musical song. One of the most common songbirds in BC — and one of the most cheerful.

Song Sparrows are one of the most studied birds in the world. Scientists have found that different populations across North America have their own local 'dialects' — regional songs unique to each area.
Where to Spot It at ABNC
Shrubby edges of the wetland, dense bushes near water, and cattail margins. Listen for a bright, musical song usually starting with two or three clear notes.
Why It Matters
Song Sparrows are generalist species that thrive in diverse shrubby habitat — their presence reflects good habitat structure along wetland edges.
