The male's jet-black plumage with brilliant red and yellow shoulder patches makes this one of the most instantly recognizable birds at ABNC's wetland. Their loud 'conk-la-reee' call is the sound of spring.
Field Note
Male Red-winged Blackbirds are famously fearless — they will dive-bomb hawks, herons, and even people who come too close to their nest territory.
Where to Spot It at ABNC
The wetland and pond area. Males perch on cattails and tall shrubs to sing and show off their red epaulets. Females are streaky brown and harder to spot.
Why It Matters
Red-winged Blackbirds are strongly tied to wetland habitats. Their abundance is a sign of wetland health, and they consume large quantities of insects and seeds.
