A small, streaky grassland sparrow with a subtle yellow eyebrow stripe. One of the most widespread sparrows in North America, and a regular visitor to open fields and meadows near ABNC.
Field Note
Savannah Sparrows build their nests right on the ground in thick grass, hidden so well that you could walk right past without seeing them.
Where to Spot It at ABNC
Open grassy fields and meadows — especially along the grassland trail edges. Listen for their thin, buzzy 'tip-tip-tseeeee' song from low perches.
Why It Matters
Grassland sparrows like the Savannah Sparrow are indicators of healthy open habitat. Their populations decline when grasslands are lost to development.
Good to Know
This little streaky sparrow is a grassland champion! It hides in long grass and sings a high buzzy song. Look for the tiny yellow stripe above its eye.
