Saskatoon Berry

Field Note
The city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was named after this plant! Indigenous peoples called them 'mis-sask-quah-too-min' in Cree, and they dried the berries into pemmican cakes for long winter journeys.
Where to Spot It at ABNC
Shrubby areas along the trails, especially forest and grassland edges. Clusters of white flowers in April–May are hard to miss.
Why It Matters
Saskatoon berries are a keystone food source — bears, birds, and dozens of other species depend on the fruit. The dense shrubs also provide critical nesting cover.
