Grassland Explorer

Find one of the large orange-barked trees along the trail. Press your nose right up to a crack in the bark on a warm section of the trunk. What does it smell like?

Scan the fence lines and any elevated perches you can see. Can you spot a bird sitting still and watching the ground? What colour is it?

Look for yellow flowers growing from the grassland. They may be large and bold, or small and delicate. Can you find more than one kind?

Pick any flower still in bloom and watch it for 60 seconds without moving. Do you see any insects land on it or hover nearby?

Many grassland plants protect themselves with thorns, spines, or stiff hairs. Can you find an example? Look closely at shrubs and low-growing plants — but don't touch!

Look down at the path and the area just off-trail. What makes up most of the ground surface here?

Head toward the upper part of the trail and find a spot where you can see the lake below. How far away does it look?

Stop wherever you are, stand still, and listen carefully for 30 seconds. How many different sounds can you count?
